This internship is designed for Food Technology, Biotechnology, or Packaging graduates looking to gain practical experience in packaging development, material testing, quality standards, and trial validations within a leading South African food manufacturing environment. About the Packaging Technologist Internship The Packaging Technologist Intern will support packaging development initiatives aimed at creating innovative, sustainable, and cost-effective solutions for the business. This position is ideal for candidates who want to build practical expertise in packaging specifications, quality standards (HACCP & ISO), material testing, line trial validations, and root cause analysis across various packaging formats and machinery. Key Responsibilities Specifications & Compliance: Assist with packaging specifications, barcode verification reports, and color standards from suppliers to operational sites, uploading records to central systems for audit readiness. Quality & Testing: Perform dimensional and functional testing to ensure packaging material conforms to specifications and meets overall quality expectations. Production & SOP Support: Support standard operating procedures (SOPs) for line start-ups and production runs while monitoring throughput, efficiency, and wastage metrics. Validation & Data Capture: Collect, capture, and analyze operational data to evaluate packaging and packing line compliance, preparing clear reports on findings. Trial Support: Participate in online factory trials for alternate or new packaging materials and new suppliers to match or optimize current performance standards. Problem Solving: Conduct basic root cause analysis on packaging challenges and communicate findings effectively with factory line staff. Minimum Qualifications & Knowledge Education: Packaging Diploma (IPSA), OR Diploma / Bachelor’s Degree in Food Technology or Biotechnology (completed or studying towards). Technical Knowledge: Foundational knowledge of packaging formats, materials, and packing machinery. Understanding of packaging analysis, testing methodologies, and line validation processes. Basic knowledge of HACCP and ISO quality standards. Skills & Competencies Ability to capture data accurately, perform basic root cause analysis, and document technical results clearly. Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact comfortably with factory line personnel and technical teams. Good attention to detail, administrative efficiency, and structured record-keeping abilities. Self-motivated, curious, and eager to learn within an FMCG research and development environment.
