About the Role
An opportunity is available for a Junior Engineer based in Hammarsdale. The successful candidate will assist the Plant Engineer with operational engineering management, maintenance planning, engineering projects, plant efficiency, safety, and compliance.
The role provides an opportunity for an engineering professional to gain practical experience in a manufacturing and plant environment while contributing to projects and initiatives aimed at reducing downtime, improving machine efficiency, and maintaining high operational standards.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Engineering Management
The successful candidate will assist with:
Strategising CAPEX priorities to reduce plant downtime and improve machine and production line efficiency.
Ensuring project work is completed to a high standard of workmanship and complies with food safety requirements.
Supporting project management and planning, including prioritising, scheduling, and allocating tasks across different engineering disciplines.
Assisting with daily and weekly maintenance planning and task allocation.
Driving initiatives aimed at reducing plant downtime and improving equipment efficiency.
Ensuring internal and external audit requirements and findings are addressed and closed within required timeframes.
Ensuring health and safety requirements are followed when specifying new equipment.
Processing change control documentation for equipment and plant modifications.
Creating and archiving project information for future reference.
Conducting time and motion studies to identify opportunities to improve workflow, ergonomics, and plant efficiency through layout changes or new equipment.
Maintenance
Ensuring required attention is given to audit requirements and findings.
Being available for call-outs, weekend work, or additional hours when required to support plant performance and maintenance operations.
Conducting work inspections and checking that tasks have been completed properly.
Determining the materials, equipment, and supplies required for maintenance activities.
Planning and managing weekend maintenance tasks and projects within budget.
Ensuring buildings and premises are maintained in a neat condition.
Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ)
Guiding engineering teams to ensure applicable legislative and organisational standards are achieved.
Following up on compliance requirements and ensuring standards are continuously maintained.
Supporting the identification and resolution of areas of non-compliance.
Financial Management
Providing input into CAPEX documentation, considering return on investment, resources, and sustainability.
Managing contractors in collaboration with the Plant Engineer to ensure work meets required standards and agreed timelines.
Assisting with regular audits of minimum and maximum stock levels for engineering spares.
Supporting the management of engineering stock at optimal levels without affecting service delivery.
Requirements
Applicants should have:
A degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
An excellent understanding of mechanical, refrigeration, and electrical engineering.
The ability to communicate information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, with senior staff and subordinates.
The ability to work flexible hours and some weekends when required.
Strong leadership skills.
A proactive approach to identifying opportunities to improve plant efficiency and effectiveness.
The ability to recommend solutions based on thorough and sound information research.
Additional Responsibilities
Supervision and Administration
Developing new work schedules for activities required on newly installed equipment.
Repairs and Renovations
Assisting with the coordination of renovations to existing facilities and construction of new facilities.
Coordinating and inspecting major contractor work involving electrical, refrigeration, mechanical, plumbing, and related systems.
Safety and Security
Ensuring engineering staff follow safety rules and regulations in line with the organisation's safety plan.
Reporting theft, hazards, and dangers identified on the premises.
Ensuring safety equipment is maintained in good working condition, including fire extinguishers, hydrants, fire pumps, and machine guarding.
Ensuring appropriate security standards are maintained and escalating security concerns to the Risk Officer.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have a strong engineering foundation, good technical knowledge, leadership ability, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. The successful applicant should be comfortable working in a plant environment and willing to work flexible hours when operational requirements demand it.
