About the Role
1Life is looking for a Junior Actuarial Analyst to join its Actuarial team in Gauteng.
The successful candidate will provide support to senior analysts and managers while using actuarial models, data analysis and analytical techniques to identify business problems, monitor performance and develop effective solutions.
This is an excellent opportunity for an actuarial graduate or developing actuarial professional looking to gain practical experience in actuarial modelling, pricing, data analysis, product development and financial services.
Key Responsibilities
Model Deployment & Testing
The successful candidate will:
Support the planning and delivery of system changes.
Engage with users to understand business requirements.
Work with the actuarial team to design appropriate solutions.
Conduct impact and sensitivity analysis before model or pricing changes are deployed.
Translate analysis results into meaningful business insights.
Explain how pricing changes may affect profitability and policy growth.
Define deployment requirements and testing approaches.
Support model and pricing performance monitoring.
Track products, pricing changes and relevant customer cohorts.
Data Collection & Analysis
Responsibilities will include:
Collecting and analysing data from various sources.
Identifying key themes and potential business impacts.
Extracting and verifying data used in actuarial models.
Reconciling data against credible sources, such as financial information.
Ensuring data is complete and accurate.
Ensuring definitions and assumptions are aligned with the relevant business problem.
Actuarial Modelling
The Junior Actuarial Analyst will assist with:
Developing actuarial models.
Maintaining and implementing actuarial models and processes.
Ensuring models are fit for purpose and accurately estimate business outcomes.
Documenting models, including their scope, definitions, data and assumptions.
Developing process documentation so models can be understood by stakeholders.
Supporting processes that reduce the risk of incorrect modelling.
Supporting new users of actuarial models and processes.
Improvement & Innovation
Identify weaknesses in existing processes, systems and procedures.
Assist with implementing improvements through established change management programmes.
Keep up to date with business developments.
Assist in proactively developing solutions with business teams.
Research and develop actuarial techniques.
Share actuarial insights with the team.
Identify opportunities to improve business efficiency.
Business Requirements & Product Development
The role will support:
Collection and documentation of business requirements.
Product development and pricing activities.
Implementation of the actuarial control cycle.
Development, deployment and monitoring of actuarial processes.
Management of key business metrics.
Analysis of metrics such as Value of New Business, Embedded Value and profit by product line.
Development of solutions aligned with experience assumptions.
Stakeholder Engagement
Support engagement with internal stakeholders, including Sales and Marketing.
Keep stakeholders informed about project outcomes.
Assist with external stakeholder engagement.
Help develop appropriate solutions relating to product development.
Maintain measurable service levels for business requests.
Provide feedback that addresses identified business issues.
Insights & Reporting
Contribute to data and analytics reports.
Assist with preparing and presenting insights and recommendations.
Communicate analytical findings to stakeholders.
Ensure monitoring activities are accurate and complete.
Regularly validate information against credible data sources.
Compliance
The successful candidate will be expected to:
Develop an understanding of organisational policies and procedures.
Understand and comply with relevant regulatory requirements and codes of conduct.
Obtain appropriate authorisation for exceptions to mandatory procedures.
Maintain high standards of integrity and professionalism in accordance with the Actuarial Society of South Africa.
Apply appropriate actuarial techniques in alignment with relevant APNs.
Performance Management
Prioritise own workload effectively.
Complete work within required quality and time standards.
Use performance management processes to improve individual performance.
Minimum Requirements
Education
Applicants must have:
Grade 12 / SAQA Accredited Equivalent – Essential.
Bachelor's Degree in Actuarial Science or a similar field – Essential.
Progress towards an Actuarial qualification – Advantageous.
Experience
The following experience will be advantageous:
1 or more years of actuarial work experience in financial services.
Prophet experience.
Additional Qualification Requirements

FSCA Competency Requirements
Where applicable, candidates may need to meet relevant Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) competency requirements, including:
FAIS-recognised qualifications.
Regulatory examinations.
Class of Business Certification.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD), according to the candidate's DOFA.
