About the Programme
The Bureau for Economic Research (BER), one of South Africa's leading economic research institutions, is inviting applications for its prestigious Economist Internship Programme 2027. Conducted in partnership with the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), this programme provides practical, hands-on training for aspiring economists looking to build successful careers in economic research, forecasting, policy analysis, and financial institutions.
Successful candidates will be employed full-time by the South African Reserve Bank while spending their first year in training at the BER in Stellenbosch. The programme is designed to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world economic analysis, offering exposure to high-level economic research and forecasting.
Since its launch in 2006, the programme has produced economists who have gone on to work at leading financial institutions, the South African Reserve Bank, National Treasury, and other prominent research organisations.
What You Will Do
As an Economist Intern, you will work alongside experienced BER economists and gain exposure to:
Economic and business-oriented research
Macroeconomic analysis and forecasting
Survey analysis and interpretation
Economic modelling and econometrics
Data analysis and economic reporting
Preparation of economic publications and presentations
Monitoring local and global economic developments
Assisting with BER's research projects and client-focused economic insights
Contributing to economic reports used by businesses, policymakers, and financial institutions
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must:
Be a South African citizen
Hold or be completing an Honours or Master's Degree in Economics by January 2027
Have studied Macroeconomics at postgraduate level
Be fluent in English
Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
Demonstrate strong analytical and research abilities
Have a genuine interest in economic analysis, forecasting, and policy research
Additional Requirements for Data Science Stream
Applicants interested in the Data Science for Economics stream should have:
Quantitative and programming-related coursework
Data analysis skills
Programming experience and/or GitHub portfolio (advantageous)
